Exploring the Rapidly Changing Landscape of Mission

Messages from Jon Fuller (EFC Resident Missiologist) and Nicole Jones-Qandah (EMCC Director of World Partners) August 14, 2025

A Message from Jon Fuller (EFC Resident Missiologist)

In his book Canoeing the Mountains: Christian Leadership in Uncharted Territory, Todd Bolsinger suggests that in uncharted terrain,

“You do again, what you have always done before.”

Doing what we’ve always done may be the best way forward. But it may also be necessary to consider different responses to a changing landscape. The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada is grateful for the opportunity to explore with the EMCC what its leaders have described as the

“… rapidly shifting landscape of global missions and the evolving role of Canadian churches and mission agencies in cross-cultural and international contexts”.

This journey of exploration includes interviews with church and mission agency leaders from outside of the EMCC and with selected stakeholders from within the EMCC, including Recognized and Supervised Global Workers. EMCC congregational leaders have also been asked to complete an on-line survey exploring mission sending practices and structures in their churches and across the denomination.

Three things stand out already from these early conversations. Leaders from outside the EMCC have been grateful for the opportunity to explore these issues and appreciate the EMCC’s courage and generosity in initiating the conversation.

External leaders and internal stakeholders recognize that the landscape is changing and they want to learn together with the EMCC. All of the conversations have reflected a confidence that God continues to build his church in Canada and globally, a continuing story in which EMCC plays a strategic role.

Would you pray for the review team of Jon Fuller (EFC Resident Missiologist), Matthew Gibbins (EFC Global Mission Roundtable) and Ron Nehring (Data Analyst) as they gather information, review the data and write a report for the EMCC leadership summarizing what the review team has heard from these various conversations.

If you are a congregational leader and haven’t already done so, please take fifteen minutes to complete the survey that was sent to you by the EMCC on Friday, July 18th and August 8th.  Your input is important as the EMCC discerns how to faithfully and effectively adapt to serve in an ever-changing landscape.

A Further Invitation to Collaborate from Nicole Jones-Qandah

I am grateful to this team, and for your prayers for them, as they continue to listen well across our denomination. If you are a pastor of a church, please fill out the survey mentioned above yourself or pass it on to board members or other congregational leaders to be completed by August 15th

Your voice, and the voice of those you serve with, is essential to seeing this research completed with a representative number of EMCC congregations.

If the reader has any questions regarding the survey mentioned above, they can reach out to jon.fuller@theefc.ca, or njones@emcc.ca
