Stand Against MAiD for Mental Illness
Greetings EMCC Family,
Our hope is always to provide you timely and helpful information on significant societal issues and to equip you with resources to lead your congregations and communities of faith with wisdom and discernment.
A law permitting euthanasia (MAiD) for mental illness alone has already been passed and is scheduled to take effect in March 2027—unless Parliament intervenes.
On June 20, 2025, MP Tamara Jansen introduced Bill C-218 in the House of Commons. This private member’s bill seeks to repeal the provisions that would allow MAiD solely on the basis of mental illness.
As a private member’s bill, C-218 will receive one hour of debate next Friday, December 5th from 1:30–2:30 p.m., followed by a second hour of debate on Thursday, February 26th from 5:30–6:30 p.m. A vote is scheduled for Wednesday, March 4th, which will determine whether the bill is sent to a parliamentary committee for further study and development.
If passed, Bill C-218 will clarify that a mental disorder cannot be considered a “grievous and irremediable medical condition” for the purposes of MAiD. In practical terms, this would ensure that individuals are not eligible for MAiD on the basis of mental illness alone.
We urge prayer for this bill, asking that God’s will would be powerfully done in the House of Commons next Friday.
We also encourage you to consider mobilizing members of EMCC churches to contact their local MPs and express support for Bill C-218 ahead of the vote on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
