Who To Meet


Kerry Bowser.
Kerry lives in downtown Toronto with his wife Cheryl, and their 3 children. Having grown up just minutes away from the inner city community of Cabbagetown, he is very familiar with city life, sounds, and struggle.

He has been ministering in the Cabbagetown community for over 17 years, currently serving as Senior Pastor with Church at the Mission (Yonge Street Mission). He team teaches a course on Urban Ministry at Emmanuel Bible College as well. He and Cheryl have both sensed a calling to work with those in poverty and need, and have been ministering together with the poor since they have been married.

Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger: Moving From Affluence to Generosity, by Ronald J. Sider.
This is an excellent book to help Christians in the Western world develop a perspective of Western prosperity in a context of world poverty and diminishing global resources. 1997: World Books.

The Urban Christian, by Raymond Bakke
This resource will give you a basic understanding of how to do ministry in an urban environment. 1987 IVP, Downers Grove, Illinois.

A Clarified Vision for Urban Ministry, by Harvie Conn
Harvie lays an excellent track to help people dispell the common myths, stereotypes and misconceptions about urban enrironments and ministries. 1987 Zondervan, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Beyond Charity, by John M. Perkins
This is a practical "How To" book for helping communities of poverty restore themselves.1993 Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Urban Mission

Sojourners is a ministry based in Washington DC and founded by Jim Wallis. They publish a an excellent monthly magazine by the same name that is full of articles dealing with Justice issues. Although they focus largely on American issues, their biblical exegesis and commentary from a justice and compassion perspective is extremely valuable.
